Listen & look closer

We start here, at York station, built on a curve. To let the railway in, archways were knocked through the city walls.

Just outside, look at the big arch through the walls on Station Road. It looks medieval. It was rebuilt in the nineteen sixties, in stone-clad steel.

And the first train out of the new station left at half past five in the morning, in June eighteen seventy-seven, for Scarborough.

Narration uses a synthetic voice. Places, routes and stories are researched, with sources and photo credits available in each tour.
