Listen & look closer

We start here, at Schottentor. The name means the Scots' Gate. But the monks it's named after came from Ireland.

Back then, Ireland was known as Scotia, so Vienna called its Irish monks the Schotten, the Scots. The name stuck.

Down here, the tram loop has two levels and no roof. It opened in nineteen sixty-one, under Mayor Franz Jonas, and Vienna named it the Jonasreindl: Jonas's roasting pan.

Behind it, the twin spires of the Votivkirche, built in thanks that an attack on Emperor Franz Joseph failed. Remember those spires. They come back.

Narration uses a synthetic voice. Places, routes and stories are researched, with sources and photo credits available in each tour.
